The Good Earth – Visits to the Geology Museum of China in Beijing

Abstract:  Two trips to the Geology Museum of China in 2010 and 2011 were remarkable for many reasons. This museum is roughly the equivalent of our National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian. While the museum is very famous for its incredible mineral collection, it also hosts world class paleontology, meteorite, and gem specimens. In other words, this museum is roughly the Chinese equivalent of the geologic portions of our National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian.

This talk will show the actual specimens on display at those times, as well as some of the people who guided and accompanied me during those visits. My first visit was more business-like, and my second trip was with my family. China hosts many type localities, where mineral and fossil specimens were first collected and described. Maybe you are familiar with some of the early dinosaur egg nests found by the Chinese and the first documented feathered dinosaurs. These are some of the exhibits I observed with awe roughly a decade ago, and will present tonight.

Two smaller geology museums in Beijing will be mentioned and illustrated. In short, a trip to Beijing to visit geologic museums is truly worthwhile!
