Regular Meeting November 8

  • Wed, November 08, 2023
  • 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Brookhaven College and ZOOM

The Dallas Paleo Society will have the Regular Monthly Meeting on the second Wednesday, November 8.

Them Bones, Them Bones

Bones are a favorite Halloween decoration.  But what can bones tell us, besides what species the vertebrate was?  DPS will meet on Wednesday, November 8th, at 7PM Central time, at our usual haunt, the Ellison Miles Building (Bldg H) at Brookhaven Campus of Dallas College (3939 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch).  We will meet in the Spindletop Room (Room 126), instead of the Boonesville Auditorium, for this meeting.  This is a nice meeting room also, with an excellent multi-screen projection system, and lots of room to spread out and show your fossils.  Our speaker will be Alisa Winkler, of the SMU Department of Earth Sciences, who will speak on “Them bones, them bones: what else can bones tell us other than to whom they once belonged?”.

Alisa Winkler earned a BA in Biology from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1978, and then an MA in Geology (with a focus in Vertebrate Paleontology) from the University of Texas in Austin in 1982.  She earned a PhD in Geology (again with a focus in Vertebrate Paleontology) from Southern Methodist University in 1990.  From 1993 to the present, she has continued at SMU as an Adjunct Assistant and Associate Professor, and then a Research Professor.  Much of her research has been on the vertebrate anatomy of small animals, especially lagomorphs (rabbits) and rodents, especially from Africa.  She has also worked on small mammals from Texas caves and other areas.  Since 2015, Dr. Winkler is also an Associate Professor in the Division of Anatomy at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Our meetings are always free and open to the public, and you may invite your friends and associates as well.  Members can bring food, sweets, and snacks to share, and DPS will provide water and sodas.  Everyone is invited to bring fossils to show.  This is one of the best reasons for meeting in person!  Out-of-towners can join our meeting on Zoom at: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89786884529 (Meeting ID: 897 8688 4529 and Passcode: 737678).  We look forward to seeing you!
